Double Knit Hand Knitting Yarn

I have made many types of wool yarn over the years, in lots of different yarn counts. From heavy wollen yarns for weaving upholstery fabric or wool carpets (or floor rugs) to worsted yarns for hand knitting and weaving fine garments or wool throws. However, one of my favourites is a hand knitting staple, a quality British Wool double knit (DK) yarn.

I can attest to the and versatility of this type of yarn which is known for its durability, warmth and softness, making it very popular among knitters of all levels.

First and foremost, if you’re after a good yarn then I always recommend looking for one that’s spun from British Wool. This means that the yarn is not only soft and warm but also long-lasting.  The wool is carefully sheared, carded (or in the case of worsted yarn, combed) and spun to create a yarn that is both strong and smooth, with a lovely texture that knitters adore. In addition to its pleasing handle, British Wool DK yarn is also environmentally friendly as it is a renewable resource that is biodegradable, making it a great choice for eco-conscious knitters.

One of the key features of double knit/DK yarn is its suitability for a wide range of different projects.  It is a light to medium weight yarn that can be used to create a wide range of projects, from cosy sweaters to soft and comfortable blankets. Additionally, its strength and resilience make it perfect for everyday wear and tear, ensuring that your creations will last for years to come.

When knitted up, DK yarn creates a beautiful texture that really brings out the details of your stitches.  Whether you're working on a simple garter stitch scarf or a more complex cable sweater, a quality wool DK yarn will make your stitches stand out and shine.

When working with any wool yarn, it is important to keep in mind that it can be prone to pilling.  To prevent this, be sure to use a sharp pair of scissors to remove any loose fibres or pills as soon as they appear.

At Adam Curtis Online, we are proud to offer our own-brand worsted DK knitting yarn called, The Coconut Collection.  Our double-knit yarn is made from 100% Real Shetland Wool and is available in four Hawaiian themed shades on 50g balls or 10 ball packs.

Real Shetland Wool is wool sourced exclusively from the Shetland Islands and known by knitters all over the world to be incredibly soft and luxurious, making it perfect for creating warm winter garments or accessories like woolly hats, scarves, shawls or gloves.

When choosing a wool yarn, you may want to consider first looking at shade cards.  A shade card is a chart that displays all the available colours and shades of a particular yarn.  This can be incredibly helpful when trying to choose the perfect colour for your project, as it allows you to see all the options at once and compare them side-by-side.
